"Welcome to Sunrise Disabled Hunters Program...I'm the Founder,
Robert Gibbs. Let me tell you how this program got started. I've been
an avid hunter and fisherman all my life. After suffering a back injury at
age 22, I was unable to get into the woods doing what I love. I have
good days and some not-so-good days. It prompted me to think back
when my friends in Arizona helped me when I needed them the most. I
was drawn for elk and even though I could barely walk after two major
surgeries in less than a week, I still wanted to go on my first elk hunt.
The night before, physical issues help me from getting out on opening
morning. On the way back from a pharmacy run that afternoon, we
stopped to check out a field on Devil Dog Road, just west of Williams,
Arizona. Later afternoon, I started to get cold, so we headed back to
camp. On the way back, five cow elk crossed the road. I was able to get
out and harvest my first elk! It was an awesome day and it felt good to
be outside! I knew that I couldn't have done it without the help of
friends and I thought: 'Wouldn't it be great if other disabled people got
to feel as good as I felt that day!' Then I began this program to sponsor
disabled hunters who don't have the financial means to go on a hunting
trip. I am committed to making Sunrise Disabled Hunters Program a
national program and bring it into every state that has accessible
hunting."
